During the month of March the NYC Department of Health under the radar cut services to 10 of their sites across the five boroughs of New York City. Budget cuts and a tough economy have forced the cutting of funds. These clinics including the Bronx site on 1309 Fulton Ave no longer offer free STD testing for the most common STDs: gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis.
"It's definitely a step backwards in terms of our diagnosis and treatment of STDs," a source from Claremont Family Health Center stated.
These types of cuts to sexual health services is a big hit to low-income families. Families like this use these types of services as their main health provides. Where else will they go for their sexual health needs?
Last year alone there were 18,000 cases of chlamydia diagnosed, 3,273 gonorrhea, and 163 syphilis. Across the metro area STD cases increased from 75,000 in 2008 to 82,000 in 2010, according to data from the city Health Department.
